What is the .GED File Extension?
.GED File Extension Description:
The files with a .ged extension are data files used with GEDCOM (Genealogical Data Communications). This is a standard format for exchanging genealogical data between different applications under the same category.
The GED file extension is usually created in a simple text format, called ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange), and contains genealogical event data and history of a certain family tree.
Basic information included in a standard file with a GED extension is as follows:
* HEAD - specifies the program used in creating the genealogical data
* VERS - version of the program specified above
* INDI - sets a specific record of an individual (entity) which is identified by its own individual ID (e.g. @I1@)
* NAME - name of the individual separated by a "/" (e.g. John / Doe/)
* SEX - gender of the individual
* FAMS - (family record) links the individual to other entities using their specific ID.
Since all data files with a GED extension are of the same format, this makes it easier for other genealogy software to read and display information created by others. Despite the different protocols on how the data is created, retrieved, or stored, all follow the standardized format of a GED extension. These programs will only retrieve, organize, link, and display the data that are stored in the file, depending on the embedded functions.
The GED file extension is also being used as development software for games. GED, or Game Editor Project File, stores environment data, settings, saved files, and so on. It is usually placed in the same location as the rest of the game files.
The file extension .ged is known to be functional under Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems, but can also be used for Pocket PC running on any platform. Note, however, that files with a GED file extension created by any game editing software will only function on the game it was created for.Author: GEDCOM
