What is the .GFO File Extension?
.GFO File Extension Description:
The file extension GFO is used by SGI as a radiosity file extension. Radiosity is an illumination algorithm that is used in rendering 3D computer graphics. Using the rendering equation for environment with diffused surfaces generates Radiosity. Radiosity methods involves the paths formed by a light source as it is reflected diffusely a number of times, until it reaches zero and before that light source hits the human eye of the observer.
Radiosity files with the GFO extension contain calculations that add an element of realism in the rendering process. The resulting scene is a closer replica to the real world phenomenon of light bouncing, and absorbing on surfaces.
Files with the GFO file extension uses the radiosity algorithm, which works by dividing the surfaces of a scene into smaller surfaces called patches. Each pair of these patches has a view factor, which is computed. View factors are a coefficient, which describes the line of sight between the pair of patches. The farther the pair of patches, the smaller is the view factor. View factors are then used in linear form for the rendering equation, which then gives a resulting linear system of equation. Calculating this equation gives the radiosity, specifically; the brightness of each patch considering factors like diffusion, inter reflections, and soft shadows.
Technically speaking, radiosity of a surface is defined as the rate where energy leaves a surface. Forms of energy include energy given off by a surface, and energy reflected from other surfaces. Techniques used in rendering utilize the transfer of energy between different surfaces, basing on the radiosity analysis between surfaces. The radiosity equation involves computation of emissivity of the surface, reflectivity of the surface, and the view factor.
SGI created the rendering software that uses the GFO file extension. SGI promotes the development of high performance computing, delivering a wide range of solution for different computing needs. One of the areas of expertise of SGI is Visual Supercomputing, where integration of visualization, computing and storage is created.Author: SGI
