What is the .GOE File Extension?
.GOE File Extension Description:
The McIDAS program suite uses the GOE file extension as the default file extension for satellite images. McIDAS stands for Man computer Interactive Data Access Systems. This program suite is used to display and analyze meteorological information. The program suite was developed by the Space and Science Engineering (SSEC) Data Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Development on the software began in 1972. It was released to the public for general distribution in 1988. The tools in the McIDAS program can be used to analyze observational, grid-point and satellite data.
The program suite has the ability to see a variety of meteorological data. The user can upload conventional observations, NLDN lightning, FSL wind profiler, gridded numerical forecast, satellite data and NEXRAD radar. The program can access data generated by a wide variety of satellites such as polar satellites and geostationary satellites.
GOES satellites generate files with the .goe file extension. GOES are Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites. Primarily the National Weather Service uses these. GOES are used to capture images of weather formations as well as quantitative meteorological data. The data gathered by the program is used to make weather forecasts, track building storms and research in meteorology. These satellites are the basis of monitoring and forecasting the weather in the U.S. Both space craft and ground control systems are supporting and monitoring these satellites.
GOES satellites generate images with the GOE file extension. Files with the file extension .goe contain special images that capture several parts of the weather on Earth. These image files cannot be seen or processed properly by traditional or basic image viewers. Users of the McIDAS program suite can have access to the images stored with the .goe file extension.
McIDAS can view several images with the GOE file extension and arrange them in a chronological sequence. The program can also detect and track cloud formations stored in the GOES files. The program can also enhance satellite images with the .goe file extension. The McIDAS program to create a set can also combine these images.Author: UW-Madison SSEC Data Center
