What is the .GP File Extension?
.GP File Extension Description:
The Graphic Environment Operating System (GEOS) was originally designed by Berkeley Softworks (now known as GeoWorks Corporation) to provide a DOS-based graphical user interface to the 8-bit Amiga Commodore computers. Nokia as the base operating system of its Communicator series later used it before it switched to Symbian.
GEOS requires two files to create an application: the file that contains the actual source code has the GOC file extension and the file that notifies the linker how the application can be structured has the GP file extension. The first step in creating an application is to set up a working directory where both files can be created. The contents of these files, particularly the source code, can be manually typed or copied and pasted into the working directory. After creating the source code, the application is compiled using the pmake utility and instructs the preprocessor, invokes the compiler, and calls upon the linker to create the GEOS executable called geode.
The file with the .gp file extension contains the Geode Parameters required to set the permanent filename and file extension of the geode library. This library goes into the imported library of the client alongside its protocol number. This file contains a long filename that can be displayed by the system where the error-checking version is linked.
This file also contains a four-letter name tokens used by the system to locate the icon for the application in the tokens database. Its token identifier number corresponds to the program author's manufacturer ID for the distinctiveness of the token. Following the tokenID is the geode type. If the type of the file is an application, it has to have its own class name for its thread wherein messages sent to it are handled by the process class.
The process class of the file with the .gp file extension specifies the application object that serves as the top level user interface object in the application. Additionally, the application object specifies for which platform the application can be compiled. This ensures that the libraries used are available for the Nokia Communicator platform.
Other geode parameters contained in the file with the .gp file extension are the heapspace command defined as the memory usage of the application that cannot be discarded, the additional amount of memory for thread activity and several libraries used by the application such as the library GEOS, the library UI, and the foam library which is specifically used by Nokia Communicator.Author: GeoWorks Corporation
