What is the .GRN File Extension?
.GRN File Extension Description:
The ASE SCORER is a suite of applications approved by the Australian Bridge Federation (ABF) allowing a Bridge Club to score events and eventually "masterpoint" these events. All finalized events produce masterpoint files for the ABF at the end of the month that includes only the green point events. Such events are combined into one file that has the file extension GRN.
There are other masterpoint files written after the finalization of the events such as the red points file with the file extension RED, the gold points file with the file extension GLD, and the ratings file with the file extension RAT. However, only the files with the .grn file extension are produced since the files with the .red file extension still require authorization numbers while the files with the .gld file extension are run independently of the clubs and that their dispatch is done by a collection of events in a single congress.
Files with the .grn file extension are usually in ASCII plain text format. They have no characters, no signs, and no spaces. They only consist of 13-digits per line in which the first seven digits represent the ABF number and the last six digits represent the awards. All digits are written in whole numbers only except for the last two digits of the awards, which can contain decimal numbers. In case the number of digits are less than 13, each field on the left are filled with zeros (0) such as 1234 becomes 0001234.
The correct naming convention of files with the .grn file extension are written in this fashion: D<clubno><gyy>.MP<n> where the <clubno> is the 4-digit club number, the <gyy> is the quarter and year when the file was made, MP stands for Masterpoint files, and the <n> is the type of points in the file where 2 is equal to red points and 3 is equal to green points.
Therefore, the filename D1234108.MP3 stands for 1234 as the club number, 1 for the first quarter, 08 for the year 2008, and .MP3 for the file extension. However, the file extension MP3 is now widely used for music files, which can cause some problems for those who want to want to view or attach their files to email. This is the reason why the file extension GRN can now be used for green points file.Author: Ian McKinnon/ Application Software Engineering Pty. Ltd
