What is the .HDL File Extension?
.HDL File Extension Description:
The HDL file extension is more commonly known to have been used by the LexisNexis Group for its HotDocs Library, specifically the forms and templates used in the HotDocs Document automation software. A more obscure use of the HDL file extension is that of the Procomm Plus, in its alternate download file listing. HotDocs is a document assembly software package that helps developers and users embed simple scripting instructions and variables into legal documents. The templates with the .hdl file extension allow users to scrutinize and input logical and organized information thru a dynamic, hierarchical interview. The resulting document will still enable information entered into an interview to be saved in XML, and still be used when building other templates. Lawyers thus frequently employ files with the HDL file extension.
HotDocs clause libraries are a good example of what particularly use the HDL file extension. A clause library allows users to insert clauses at any particular point in the document and lets developers arrange the clauses in a definite order and hierarchy. There are four types of files that are used in the clause libraries and those that take the HDL file extension are an organized set of shortcuts that correspond to a certain set of clauses. The clause libraries are coupled with a given template and its files are inserted using the HDL file extension, and the command <INSERT "Clause Name.hdl">.
It is likely that a clause library be composed of template files and not clause files, because files with the .hcl file extension, or clause files, are only a collection of HotDocs templates that are stored in a compressed format. In order to allow all the templates to utilize a different component file and not share the file whose name matches with the library's name, files with the .hdl extension should be in the folder where the clauses are in. Also, those files need to go together with files having a .cmp extension. And lastly, the .hdl files should possess either no paths at all or the full path, in order to locate them when drafted.Author: Matthew Bender &:, Company, Inc., Datastorm Technologies, Inc.
