What is the .HGL File Extension?

.HGL File Extension Description:

The HGL file extension is a graphics file used in high-end 32-bit plotting software, like WinSMITH Weibull and WinSMITH Visual. The HGL extension is also similar to the HPGL file extension being used today.

A plotter graphics file like HGL (HPGL) is being used by many organizations for high-quality plotting for various purposes, like statistics, graphs, charts, mapping, and so on. Originally, the above application uses its own file format, like WSW and WSV, but the drawback is that it can't be opened by other applications, due to compatibility reasons.

In order for other applications to open images with WSV and WSQW file format, both have to be converted into a higher quality 32-bit format, like HGL - which can later be imported into programs, like Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.

To include the HGL and HPGL support for Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, the installer "Hpgl.exe" needs to be downloaded from the Microsoft Corporation support site, and manually executed in your system. The HPGL support is compatible with Microsoft Office 97 and above.

The data included in a file with a .hgl extension include color palettes, which utilizes 32-bit alpha channel color schemes, coordinates of pixels for specific colors assigned to produce the image, text data, and so on.

High-end plotters, like those released by Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Canon also prefer this file format.

In case you are using a WSW or a WSV file extension for your plotted graphics, you can convert it to HGL by simply renaming it with an .hgl file extension. For example, if you have a file "graph.wsv", you can covert it by first opening the file using its designated application. Then, save the file and add an .hgl extension at the end (e.g. graph.hgl).
