What is the .HLB File Extension?
.HLB File Extension Description:
The HLB file extension is associated with a fully programmable Text Processing Utility called the nu/TPU. Its main purpose is to build new word processors as well as batch-oriented text manipulation routines. It includes the following major features:
* multiple buffer and multiple window processing
* over 300 built-in editing functions
* free and bound cursor movement
* automated allocation and management of screen and memory resource sub-processes
* pattern matching
* ability to define keys and keyboard layout
* extensible language
* learn sequences
* batch mode processes
* Automated online help facility.
The automated online help facility is one of the key elements to nu/TPU's extensibility. It has the ability to customize help files, which is useful if you are creating your own editing features and would like to provide online help documentation.
The help files contain text to be retrieved by the HELP_TEXT built-in function. They are broken into two parts, namely the actual help text contained in the files with the .hlb file extension and the files with the .idx file extension that are indices into the files with the .hlb file extension.
The nu/TPU supplied help files with the .hlb file extension are the EVEHELP, EVEKEY, TPUHELP, and SIHELP, in which, the files that have the EVE and Si prefix are actually the help files made for the EVE and SI interfaces. This is while the TPU file with the .hlb file extension is the help file for the program itself. These files can be completely replaced to support new applications for foreign languages.
The files with the .hlb file extension include online help documentation meant for all kinds of built-in procedures, dynamic keypad aid in editing keys, along with the TPU language, plus general information on the product. They are ASCII files that contain the help text descriptions and are in the nu_tpu/common directory.
Each help entry in the file with the .hlb file extension begins with a form-feed character and carriage return, ASCII values 12 and 13 respectively. The next line is the unique help entry index name, starting in the first column, followed by a carriage return. The help index name is usually the command name being described. Multiple works may be substituted by an indicated index name that may also be connected via underscored characters.Author: Fermilab
