What is the .HPM File Extension?
.HPM File Extension Description:
The HPM file extension is used in HP NewWave's Executive MemoMaker (EMM). HP as a graphical desktop environment and office productivity tool developed NewWave. The application was programmed to run under the early versions of Windows, so its development halted when the Windows 95 operating system was introduced. The HPM file extension was specifically attached to compositions produced under EMM.
EMM's ancestor, MemoMaker, is a simple word processor that was produced for the HP150. HP150 was released under HP series 100, which is a means of providing an MS-DOS based, user friendly office computer. All products under HP series 100 were oriented towards the production of business PCs. The HPM file extension was introduced when MemoMaker was improved with the addition of features like graphics support.
HP later released ExecuDesk to allow context switching between different programs. The HPM file extension fit in perfectly with this application, along with other applications that used the 'executive' tag. However, it has become apparent that word processing documents had to be interconvertible, in order to become versatile office tools. Document format converters like AWCONVERTER, under HP's DeskManager, enabled then-popular word processors like AdvanceWrite to be understood by the HP word processors. AWCONVERTER made it possible to convert HPM file extensions into ASCII text and HP Word format, and vice versa. Conversion to and from files with the .hpm file extension sought to retain the printed appearance of the text, while allowing editing to be applied in the document even after conversion.
However, there were quite a number of restrictions that applied to the conversion from AdvanceWrite to EMM and vice versa. To make the most out of the AdvanceWrite/EMM conversion, users could try and format the documents as simply as possible. If the document was created in EMM, the margins and justifications should be kept constant. If it was done in AdvanceWrite, formatting should be kept as simple as possible to keep within range of the EMM's capabilities.Author: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.
