What is the .HQX File Extension?
.HQX File Extension Description:
Files with the HQX file extensions are binary files, which have been converted to BinHex format so that they can be transmitted as ASCII files via the Internet. Short for "binary-to-hexadecimal", BinHex is a process that actually converts a direct file to have an ASCII file format, apart from its previous binary form. This enables you to actually send spreadsheet, application files and word processing via SFTP or email. Sometimes, BinHex files use .hex instead of the .hqx file extension.
Files with the .hqx file extension can be recognized by the message placed on the first line of the file that identifies they have been BinHexed such as "This file must be converted with BinHex 4.0". Many 64 character lines consisting of random letters, punctuation marks and numbers then follow it. These files take up more space than their original files; however, files with the .hqx file extensions are less likely to be corrupted during transfer. They are useful particularly for Mac OS 9 and earlier versions because of their ability to combine the data fork and the resource fork of the file that maintains file integrity and preserves them during transit.
On Windows, the programs that open HQX files are WinZip, ZigZag, and ESTsoft ALZip while on Mac OS, most applications invoke a type of decoder automatically in order to decode BinHex files such as the Allume Systems Stuffit Expander and Dare to be Creative iArchiver.
The BinHex file format was created to allow transferring of files with the HQX file extensions on the Internet, to bundle both forks (data and resource) in a single container which composes the Macintosh file, and to avoid sending repetitive sequences of identical characters.
Some programs also use the HQX file extension in order to build Mac files on other platforms. It is one of the standards of most Macintosh mail software. It automatically code and decode the data stream without the users knowing they are using Binhexed files. However, when Mac users send files to PC users, some mail packages on the PC do not know how to open .hqx file extensions, thus just store the coded files on the hard disk.Author: Tim Mann
