What is the .HXM File Extension?

.HXM File Extension Description:

The file format HXM is a native file format used by the 3D game software Descent 2 for its HAM modeling. The files with the .hxm format are responsible for newer data codes, in replacement of the older HAM files used in the earlier version of the game. It replaced the old HAM file type and is responsible for the improved graphic renditions and characteristics of the gaming environment during gameplay.

An .hxm file is created for each level the user saves in the game. The one to one correspondence is a typical characteristic of file dependency creation methods, which simplifies the different instance settings of the environments per level. The saved game, which is saved in .rl2 format, is co-dependent with its .hxm file format equivalent when accessed in the gaming console.

The contents of an .hxm file format include the different modeling data of the enemy robots, behavior types, and the weapon type systems employed. Some of the other information sets are as follows: polygon models of the environment, power-up types and icons in-game, reactors, robot-types, sounds, V-axis clips, W-axis clips, and weapon types. These are all loaded into the game, along with the corresponding file, to provide the user with the same instance of the gaming environment.

The file setting of an .hxm file is open-ended and can be modified to change the gameplay, depending on the tweak that the user likes to have. Editing certain elements in the .hxm file can be done using a third party program, called haxmedit.exe.

The game Descent 2 itself is an old game and is still being run in DOS mode. Nevertheless, the game itself is still patronized by fans due to the open source HXM files, which enhance the user's gaming environment and provide diversity and extended playback value.
