What is the .ICN File Extension?

.ICN File Extension Description:

Icons are commonly used in operating systems that utilize graphical images as representations for program, command, web pages or files, which are implemented for faster execution. The file extension .icn is associated with icon files, which can be produced with the use of different image editing programs and can be read by operating systems. The most common form taken by the .icn file extension is ICO (for Microsoft Windows) and ICNS (for Mac OS X), which all represent an icon image file.

A file extension .icn normally would contain numerous images that can be of different graphic formats (BMP, GIF, TIFF, etc), and are commonly distributed with software applications, that can be applied to various configurations of the user's monitor. The file extension .icn in concept is the same for all operating system platforms only differing in the used extensions, but in terms of image formats and resolutions, they cater to the same group of files.

Under the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System environment for example, will not support 128 x 128 formats of icons using normal, while for the Mac OS X can handle this resolution and even up to a maximum of 512 x 512. This is the reason for why the file extension .icn has different versions of the image, to be able to properly display regardless of system configuration.

The file extension .icn is also used as a source code document of the programming language ICON, which is classified as a high level (human readable), all-purpose language that can handle wide arrays of character strings and data structures. The file extension .icn is generated by a procedural and imperative development environment that implements syntaxes similar to Pascal and C languages, but with higher level semantics. The .icn file extension represents the comprehensive facilities of the language in processing structures, expressions, and queries, with an excellent graphics services.

The programming language ICON, which generates the .icn file extension, features automatic garbage and storage handling, with functionality of creating objects that do not require a declared size during coding. The language can also accept numeric strings for input, which it will convert automatically during computation procedures and will make it very flexible and capable in deployment for text editing and analysis, document formatting, expert systems, symbolic mathematics, and more.
