What is the .ICO File Extension?

.ICO File Extension Description:

The file extension ICO stands for "icon" related to Windows Icons. A computer icon, or simply Icon, is a tiny graphic, normally ranging from 16 pixels by 16 pixels up to 128 pixels by 128 pixels, that represent an application, folder, file, or device found on the computer system. Icons are pictorial illustration of objects that are important for the program's visual identity by conveying meaning that computer users perceive instantly.

The files with the ICO file extension have the XOR and the AND bitmaps. The Bitmap is a form of memory organization or file format used in storing digital images. The XOR bitmap holds and directs the computer icon to the image mask. The AND bitmap is an image mask that determines which portion of an icon is transparent.

Modifying the ICO file customizes icons with the file extension ICO. Small icons located at the address bar of a Web browser is the product of a file namely favicon.ico, which stands for "favorite icon". The favicon.ico uses the file extension ICO to display the small Website image in the address bar at the left of the URL. A classic example of a favicon.ico image is the "M" inside a blue box for the Microsoft Website.

The user is able to create a favicon.ico image displayed on the Website's address bar of the user. In an icon editor, users can start creating an image with a 16x16-pixel bitmap image and then store the image with the name "favicon" accompanied by the ICO file extension. The newly created favicon.ico image is saved in the root directory of the website. The Internet Explorer then searches for the favicon.ico file and automatically displays the icon in the address bar provided it is a real .ico file extension of the correct size.
