What is the .IGES File Extension?

.IGES File Extension Description:

The .iges file extension contains data from Computer-Aided Design (CAD) projects to be used to transfer information from one CAD application to another. The .iges extension is defined as "Initial Graphics Exchange Specification."

The format of data stored inside an .iges file is common to all CAD applications. This allows different CAD programs to share data by simply saving their projects to files with an .iges format. The basic file structure of a file with the .iges file extension has 5 main sections, such as:

* Start (S) section

* Global (G) section

* Directory (D) section

* Parameter (P) Data section

* And Termination (T) section

All these structures are encoded using the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) format, or can simply be defined as a text file. This makes it the most convenient and readable format for different types of CAD software.

A file that conforms to the IGES file format includes multi-dimensional information, from 2D to 3D data, necessary to recreate the image produced by the CAD application. In truth, only a fraction of the .iges file contains textual data, which is more likely existent under the summary information. It contains the following data:

* Parts summary (different objects used in a CAD application with their corresponding labels)

* Revisions of the mechanical part including the date it was created

* Volume of the part used in the CAD project

Since the file with tge .iges format is supported by many CAD applications, opening it is the same as how a CAD application opens its primary file. Note, however, that not all CAD applications and toolkits have the capability create an IGES file. Certain converters are necessary to perform this task.
