The IMQ file extension is a compressed PDS format intended for planetary imagery by NASA. The PDS (Planetary Data System) is a universal information format sustaining limitless colors, utmost image dimensions, compression, numerous images for every file, numerical layouts, and a range of platforms and functions used to store planetary information. The IMQ extension is a standard layout formulated by the planetary division of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for storing compressed lunar, stellar, and terrestrial data collected by interplanetary spaceships.

The PDS is a collection of regulations for the assembly of labels to illustrate the composition of various information files, including imagery. The foundation for the marker is the (ODL) Object Description Language that specifies each separate section of the file information as a distinctive item. A PDS compressed ".imq" image dossier contains a number of special elements. The marker might be a component of the file information, or it might exist in a separate folder. Each compressed representation file might have important and irregular information. There should be color palette or icon histogram information prior to or after the image.
