What is the .LCF File Extension?
.LCF File Extension Description:
The LCF file extension is defined as a Linker Control File, which characterizes the layout of memory allocations for the MSC8144 ADS processor. The file with an .lcf format is coded using the CodeWarrior application for the StarCore DSP 3.0 IDE (Integrated Development Environment).
The data contained in the file with the .lcf extension is text-based, which defines the placement of codes and data in the memory for the application.
First, the .lcf file contains codes for the memory management unit (MMU) of the MSC8144. The code will determine the memory allocation and map to different areas of the MSC8144 processor. There are two known address to be used in the .lcf file -- the physical address and the virtual address.
The physical address is the actual address of the specified device within the MSC8144 DSP. Since the physical address is already embedded into the processor and cannot be changed by the programmer. This header will also map out the memory and peripherals of the MSC8144 ADS processor.
The virtual address, on the other hand, is the address used by the StarCore 3400 (SC3400) core during runtime to access various memory and peripheral devices found inside the MSC8144 ADS processor.
In simple terms, the physical address stated in the .lcf file defines the physical device; while the virtual address is only used by an application during runtime to access the resources in the MSC8144 ADS processor.
Before a file with an .lcf extension will execute its stated directives, other files also need to be present to give the .lcf file format its functions, such as: "mmu_attributes.txt", "common.txt", "descriptors.txt", and "crtscbmm.cmd". Note, however, that the first three text files will be contained inside the codes of the .lcf file.Author: Freescale Semiconductors
