What is the .LDB File Extension?
.LDB File Extension Description:
The file extension LDB is used by the Microsoft Jet database engine for its multi-user schema in order to determine which records are locked in a shared database and who locked the shared database file.
Files with the .ldb file extension are automatically created when a database for shared use is opened. This is because they store computer and security names placing extended byte range locks. They have the same name as the opened database file with the .mdb file extension. They are located in the same folder as the opened database. For example, when you open the photos.mdb for shared use, a file with the .ldb file extension with the same name such as photos.ldb is created automatically inside a similar folder.
As soon as the last user closes the shared database, the file with the .ldb file extension is also automatically deleted. This is except in cases where the user does not have rights to delete the file or the file is marked as corrupted. If the file with the .ldb file extension is marked as corrupted, it contains the name of the user who was using it at the time it was marked.
Record locking is not used if a user opens a database with exclusive access, thus, Microsoft Access does not attempt to open or create a file with the .ldb file extension. If the database is always opened for exclusive use, the user needs to only read and write privileges to the folder.
For each person who opens a shared database, the actual Jet database engine is the one responsible for writing an entry inside the file with the .ldb file extension. The size entry of each file with the .ldb file extension is 64 bytes. Its first 32 bytes contain the computer's name while the second 32 bytes contain the security name. The maximum number of concurrent users that the said Jet database engine can support is 255; therefore, the size of the file with the .ldb file extension is never larger than 16 kilobytes.
Once its user closes his shared database, it is noted that its user's entry will not be taken out from the assigned file with the .ldb file extension. However, it can be overwritten once another user opens the database. This means that you cannot use the file with .ldb file extension alone to determine who is currently using the database.
The assigned Jet database engine uses the LDB file extension in order to prevent users from writing data to pages that other users have locked and in order to determine who has other pages locked. Thus, if a so-called "lock conflict" with some other user has been detected, the file with the .ldb file extension is opened in order to obtain the user and the computer's security name that locked the file.Author: Microsoft Corporation
