What is the .LDF File Extension?
.LDF File Extension Description:
The .ldf file extension defines SQL Server Transaction Log Files. SQL Server, developed under Microsoft, is a relational database management system (RDBMS) that maps a database over a defined set of operating-system files.
LDF files are one of three file types that SQL Server has. This type of file is considered as a log file, which ends with the .ldf extension and holds all of the log information that a database does LDF files are necessary for recovering data and serves as their backup. The SQL Server is not capable of enforcing the .ldf extension but uses it as a default for identifying transaction log files.
The information files with the .ldf extension include the transactions and the modifications applied to the database. These modifications involve all deletes, inserts, and updates.
The records that LDF files hold support three operations. The first operation that LDF files support is the recovery of individual transactions. This means that if a ROLLBACK statement is issued by an application, the .ldf file is used to reverse that operation. Another is that if the server should detect an error, like having the communication with the client lost, the log records with the .ldf extension will be used to back up the incomplete transaction.
The second operation supported by LDF log files is the recovery of all transactions that are incomplete when the server (SQL) is started. This indicates that if a server running under SQL fails, incomplete transactions happen. The LDF file then rolls back to a recovery point where the database is fully functioning.
Rolling stored databases forwarded to the point of failure is the third operation supported by files with the .ldf extension. This means that a database can be restored right before its failure point.
Transaction log files with the .ldf extension can be positioned on either NTFS or FAT file systems. They cannot be positioned on file systems that have been compressed.Author: Microsoft Corporation
