What is the .LFL File Extension?
.LFL File Extension Description:
Maniac Mansion is a highly-acclaimed adventure game known for its innovative interface, great storyline, and new revolutionary gaming ideas. This game was made using the SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) engine originally developed by LucasFilm Games, now LucasArts Entertainment, a leading developer of interactive software for personal computers and videogame console systems.
Since then, the SCUMM system was used for all games created by LucasArts. The system contains two parts: a set of compiler tools for putting all the parts of the game together, and an interpreter for the execution of the actual game. Distributed along with the executables are some resource files containing scripts, graphics, music, etc. These resource files end with the file extension LFL stored in the LucasFilm Library (hence LFL).
Each file with the .lfl file extension corresponds to a room in Maniac Mansion and contains interesting information that describes the room such as scripts, object images, object names, path finding boxes, sound and music, cutscenes, and graphics like characters, objects, and backgrounds. All the room files with the .lfl file extension were later bundled into one or more large files, leaving the structure of each file the same.
The file with the .lfl file extension begins with 0-1 bytes Offset to something near the end, followed by two sets of unknown bytes. The fourth byte is the width of the picture in columns and the fifth byte defines the picture height in rows followed by colors black, brown, and red with C64 values. Another unknown byte follows. Next to it are Offset to picture character sets, picture screen maps, picture colour maps, picture walk behind masks, and walk behind mask character data.
Byte 20 identifies the number of objects contained in the file with the .lfl file extension and is immediately followed by two sets of unknown bytes with length given by NUB1 and NUB2. Offset to object images usually appear at byte 28 where the images at these locations are like the add.to.pics function in the Sierra AGI system.
The character data section of the file with the .lfl file extension is a series of code sequences designed to be displayed in multicolour graphics mode. Each has a character set of size 256. The data is in a compressed form stored in the location of the character memory. When the data is uncompressed, the result is a character set of size 2048. The decompression stops when the uncompressed data reaches this length.Author: LucasArts Entertainment Company
