What is the .LIB File Extension?
.LIB File Extension Description:
Library Files that use .lib file extensions, which are produced by various applications, enclose data types (constants, text clippings, objects, functions, images and others) required by host applications. The file extension .lib in the context of computing science is oftentimes classified as sets of subprograms, which are implemented in software development that contains helper data and codes, providing services to other programs. Modular approach is commonly used in changing and sharing of the contents of the file extension .lib, which are tapped by EXE format files that can be both libraries and executable programs. However, majority of library files are non-executable.
Major system services provided by newer operating system environments are deployed with the use of .lib file extensions, which contain majority of the codes utilized by modern software applications that can be categorized as either static or dynamic. Traditionally, .lib file extensions are only considered as static libraries, or what is commonly referred to as archives that contain a collection of routines transferred to an application with the use of a binder, linker or a compiler, in order to create EXE file formats and object files.
Dynamic .lib file extensions on the other hand are those that are loaded by a program during execution, instead of compilation, and remain a separate entity on the storage media. The bulk of the work associated with the .lib file extension (dynamic library), is found during the loading and execution process, which is part of the services of the hosting operating system, which loads part of the processes into system memory. The main difference between the two lies in the fact that dynamic libraries are bounded by software licenses, and are harder to locate in memory, because the loader can only identify them once they are invoked.
The file extension .lib finds usage in the AS/400 product line of IBM as a Physical File Library component that is associated with the system filter of every directory, and related to the FILE and MBR formats. The .lib file extension is also implemented as an Actions Library by the Game Maker program; Used with installers and programming languages under the COFF (Common Object File Format) of Microsoft Windows; related to the LID format implemented as a backup library file by the Scholar's Aid learning software; and as a House Style File, related to the SIB file format of the Sibelius musical scoring application.
