What is the .LJ File Extension?
.LJ File Extension Description:
The LJ file extension represents the bitmap image generated as a printer file for HP LaserJet printers. The LJ file extension was developed by HP to allow compatibility with graphics created in bitmap and support high resolution LaserJet printing for bitmap images.
Installation disk that come with every HP LaserJet printer package is bundled with an HPLASER program, which is used to transfer a bitmap file. A bitmap is generally defined as a rectangular array of pixels that can be either an image (graphics) or part of a frame buffer of a particular device. The LJ file extension makes it possible for HPLASER programs to read and load graphics bitmap saved as files with the .lj file extension. With this, printing of bitmap images can then be queued in any model of HP LaserJet printer.
The HP LaserJet is capable of producing black and white images with a resolution of 300 dots per inch. When producing files with the .lj file extension, the HPLASER program reads them and sends to an HP LaserJet printer. If the file is too large to print on a single sheet of paper, the HP LaserJet can automatically split up the image into sections and print the remaining sections into separate sheets of paper. Users can then trim and paste together the sheets of paper to complete the bitmap image. This feature is often used when in desktop publications with embedded large bitmap files.
The main selling point of an HP LaserJet printer is its high resolution printing. When producing files with the .lj file extension, the HP LaserJet comes up with high-quality graphics bitmap that can be printed in its entirety, including text, graphical representations and dithering for grey levels. Bitmap images should be converted as files with the .lj file extension before the HP LaserJet printer can load the bitmap. The bitmap can be set into a byte array and print this byte array as raster data to the HP LaserJet printer. Before sending to the printer, the header information of the bitmap must be separated from the main raster data.
Note that later models of HP LaserJet printers (III, 4, 4plus) have enhanced printing features such as Resolution Enhancement Technology (RET) and PCL printing language. The files with the .lj file extension are completely compatible with these advanced features, so that when printing bitmap images, HP LaserJet printer users will be able to enjoy its full advantage.Author: Hewlett Packard
