What is the .LMP File Extension?
.LMP File Extension Description:
The LMP archive process of saving game related information into tiny lump files was first conceptualized by Id Software, Inc. for its line of games, like the Doom series, Quake, and other similar first-person shooter software. The .lmp file otherwise referred to as a "lump file," is also called and referred to as a Doom or Quake demo file. Quite contrary to its referred name, it is not a shortened version of the whole game itself, but is more like a dump file of recorded last saved information on the character being used in the game. It is similar to a profile setting, wherein a saved character's stats and location are saved until such a time that the main game calls for it to be loaded up.
The files with the .lmp extension also include the environment and other game settings before it, and are saved in a generated hexadecimal code. It is accessed by the WAD engine of Doom and Quake, also called a "Where's All the Data" engine.
The file extension LMP and all the other files with the .lmp extension found in the installation folder of either Doom or Quake is gathered, and all the valid data relevant to the specific game are collated. These are, then, sequentially loaded to recreate the whole instance of the game, from character, to the monsters, and the environment sprites and objects.
The LMP file extension is an interdependent data file, wherein the original retail version of the game is needed for it to be properly loaded. The .lmp file extension is also dependent on other files with the same .lmp extension to be able to create a complete and working game environment for the user.
