What is the .MAT File Extension?
.MAT File Extension Description:
The file extension MAT can refer to the Microsoft Access Tables created through the use of Microsoft Access. The program is a database administration structure that unites the relational Microsoft Jet Database Engine with a graphical user interface and software progress tools. Included within the files with the .mat file format are information and queries used for several database servers, like SQL, Oracle, or any ODBC-complaint data container.
However, another type of the file extension MAT exists and is used by the MATLAB software. It has the description of "Variables Binary File." MATLAB is the numerical computer platform and programming language created by MathWorks. The files with the .mat file extension are created through the use of several methods, including the manipulation of matrices, functions and data plotting, algorithm implementation, user interface creation, and interfacing with other available programming languages.
Files with the .mat file extension are used for the MATLAB function as a binary data container. Some of these files may include arrays, variable, tasks, and other sorts of data that can be generated in special formats just by selecting a version within the MATLAB Preferences. When a file with the .mat file extension is saved using a MAT file, it can contain specific data, depending on the level of the MAT file. A level four MAT file can support 2D matrices and character strings, while MAT files in the fifth level can include extra support for multidimensional numeric arrays, sparse arrays, cell arrays, character arrays, structures, and objects. The MAT file extension can also be used to represent audio in a 64-bit floating point, 16-bit signed integer, and 8-bit unsigned integer.
If a file with the .mat file extension is created through Access, it can only be opened from such a program in the Windows platform. However, both the Mac OS and Windows operating systems, through the use of the MathWorks MATLAB and FMJ-Software Awave Studio programs, support the second type of MAT file extension.Author: Microsoft, MathWorks
