What is the .MEC File Extension?
.MEC File Extension Description:
The .mec file extension is used by the Maximus bulletin board system. Bulletin board systems, or BBS, are early versions of today's online message boards and forums. These programs allow users to send messages and files, read news, play games and send private messages. System operators monitor BBS. These often house local communities because users need to use telephone lines to connect to them. Long distance rates applied for these connections so most BBS users were located in the same area. This means of communication and creating local networks were popular before the rise of the Internet.
Maximus is one program that allows users to create, manage and maintain bulletin board systems. The program was developed for systems that ran on DOS and OS/2. Later releases were updated so that they could be supported by 32-bit Windows operating systems. The source code for the program was later released to the public so that development could be continued after the company stopped supporting and developing the program. Since the release of the program source, versions for Linux and Unix-based platforms have been released.
The Maximus BBS program allows users to edit the configuration settings of their bulletin board by editing source code files. The program uses two programming languages for its source code files. One is MEX, which provides the functions, arrays and complex strings of data. System operators can edit MEX source code files to create programs, which interact with the users on the BBS.
The other type of language used is MECCA. Source code files written in MECCA are given the MEC file extension. Source code files with the MEC file extension are essentially text files, which contain the processes needed to make up the BBS. Files with the file extension .mec are used to store the colors and designs of the BBS. If the user intends to make changes to the BBS, they can do so by editing files with the MEC file extension and compiling them. Once the source code files with the MEC file extension are compiled, they are turned into binary configuration files. Editing files with the MEC file extension can result in text color changes, menu creation, creating files to store information on a disk or allowing the BBS to give access and information to BBS door programs.Author: Scott J.
