What is the .MFF File Extension?
.MFF File Extension Description:
The file extension .mff is used to represent a Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) audio file format, incorporating a set of parameters defined by the MPC standards governing MIDI interfaces such as synthesizers, electric keyboards, and similar devices to the computer system. Recorded music is stored in audio files using the file extension .mff, and occupies a smaller storage area compared with WAV audio files, that keeps a comprehensive collection of digitized audio.
As opposed to WAV formats, the .mff file extension does not have digitized sound sets; but rather, data needed to play digitized sounds using a MIDI compatible hardware device, that has generally a better audio quality than WAV formats played back without the MIDI interface on a computer system. The .mff file extension and MIDI format are popular standards with arrangers and composers of music, who use computer systems as a tool in creating their work.
The file extension .mff is also used as an audio format commonly found in mobile phone ringtones, which are created with the MIDI format, or commonly referred to as polyphonic tones. The .mff file extension like any audio format can be shared among other computer users, regardless of the operating system platform installed.
The file extension .mff can be transferred from a Macintosh-based computer, to a Microsoft Windows-based system and vice versa, just by using the built-in file transfer tools of these operating system environments. However, for transferring from a Windows-based to a Macintosh-based system, the .mff file extension must first be renamed to MIDI (observe capitalization) because not all programs supported by the Mac OS can recognize the .mff file extension or .midi (in lower case), even if successfully transferred.
Aside from the .mff file extension, there is other file extensions associated with the MIDI format as defined by the MMA (MIDI Manufacturers Association). Some of these are the SMF (Standard MIDI File) that organizes the MIDI signals in one or multiple parallel tracks; KAR (MIDI Karaoke File), which synchronized the song lyrics with the SMF; XMF (Extensible Music File), in which SMF chunks are combined with DLS data format; and RMI (RIFF-based MIDI file) commonly utilized by the Microsoft Windows Operating System. Extraction of the data portion of the RIFF will produce an SMF format.Author: MIDI Manufacturers Association Incorporated
