What is the .MIME File Extension?
.MIME File Extension Description:
Files with the .mime file extension are called "Multi-Purpose Internet Mail Extension." These files are encodings used for e-mail messages or attachments that can incorporate 8-bit pieces of data. However, the MIME file extension can also include characters besides the standard United States character set.
The file extension MIME is a standard for Internet messaging and has the function to extend the format of e-mail messages, in order to support text in character sets, non-text attachments, multi-part message bodies, and header information in non-ASCII character sets. The files with the file extension .mime are virtually transmitted via SMTP; thus, Internet e-mail can also be called an SMTP/MIME e-mail.
In order to make sure that these e-mail messages which contain images or additional non-text information are delivered with the maximum protection for corruption, the MIME file extension provides a process for non-text information to be encoded as text. The process of encoding done by files with the .mime extension is called base64.
The mechanisms of the files with the .mime file extension particularly provide named media type parameters, as well as named dispositions. The media type has the ability to specify any amount of parameters that have a relationship with its subtypes. Whichever specific subtype actually has the capability to have additional parameters on its own usage. On the other hand, the disposition value may specify a number of linked parameters.
There are also several types of files with the .mime file extension associated with other file extensions, i.e. .txt, .htm, .jpg. Every type consists of a primary type and a subtype. The primary type has the function to provide only the most general indication of the content type, like whether or not the file is a specific audio, video, text, or others. However, the subtype has the task of refining the primary type and provides the required information for a computer program to render the content.Author: unknown
