What is the .MOD File Extension?
.MOD File Extension Description:
The MOD file extension is primarily used to represent music and was also the first module file format. Files with the .mod file extension can store several pages or patterns of music data in a form similar to that of a spreadsheet. The patterns may contain instrument numbers, controller messages, and note numbers. The number of notes that can be simultaneously played depends on how many tracks there are in each pattern.
The file extension MOD also provides a list of the order in which to play the patterns. Additionally, files with the .mod file extension include their own samples and should sound exactly the same from one player to another. Oftentimes, files with the .mod file extension are termed "tracker modules" and the method of arranging modules is called tracking.
In 1987, Karsten Obarski created the foremost module-creating program called the Ultimate Soundtracker, for the Amiga computer. The program was then cloned several times with ProTracker and NoiseTracker as the direct descendants of the original Soundtracker code.
The files with the .mod file extension created through the mentioned programs use inverse-frequency note numbers. The files can also store tracks from 4 to 32 voices and 15 to 31 instruments. The instruments are played using simple volume levels. The pattern within the files with the .mod file format is represented in a sequencer user interface as a table accompanied with one column for each channel, and each column has 62 rows.
The original MOD file extension uses a minimum time frame of 0.02 seconds, also called the vertical blanking, since the software used for timing was running at 50 Hz or 60 Hz. The speed setting defines the rate at which the pattern data is played. Each row in the pattern data lasts for one vertical blanking times the current speed setting, where the speed setting varies from 1 to 255. However, later versions of the format replaced vertical blanking with an adjustable time period within the range of 0.01 to 0.078 seconds.
Aside from storing music data, the files with the .mod file extension are also being used in many digital cameras. More so, the file extension MOD also served as a game module, AMPL module, and phpBB Modification Template.Author: Karsten Obarski
