What is the .MP3 File Extension?
.MP3 File Extension Description:
The common audio format for audio storage is the file extension MP3. The MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, or the MP3 file extension, is a digital encoding format that uses a form of lossy data compression. A specific algorithm for lossy compression is used to significantly lessen the amount of data necessary to represent the audio recording, and still sound like an authentic reproduction of the original uncompressed audio. The method of compression, also known as Perceptual Coding, works by decreasing the precision of certain parts of sound that are labeled as beyond the auditory resolution capacity of most people.
The Perceptual Coding used for the file extension MP3 provides a representation of sound within a short-term time and frequency analysis window. Using psychoacoustic models to remove or reduce precision components less audible to humans and record the remaining data in an efficient manner does this.
Files with the .mp3 file extension can be created at higher or lower bitrates, with higher or lower resulting quality. Additionally, a file with the .mp3 file extension produced using the mid-range bitrate setting of 128kbit/s will usually result in a file that is about 1/10th the size of the CD file created from the original source of the audio. There are several bitrates specified in the standards of creating files with the .mp3 file extension, which range from 32 to 320kbit/s. There are also sampling frequencies available, like 32, 44.1 and 48 kHz.
The file extension MP3 consists of multiple MP3 frames encompassing the MP3 header and the MP3 data. This specific frame sequence is also called an Elementary stream. The frames are not independent objects and cannot be extracted on arbitrary frame boundaries, while the actual audio payload is the MP3 data. On the other hand, the MP3 header can consist of a sync word that is utilized to identify the beginning of a valid frame.Author: Fraunhofer Society
