What is the .MPC File Extension?
.MPC File Extension Description:
The files with the .mpc file extensions are audio files compressed with Musepack audio compression. They were designed to provide transparency, thus there are no differences between the original wave file and the smaller MPC file. They are recognized as having higher quality sound than MP3 files (though not as popular) while there decoding speed surpasses all others by a big margin.
Formerly known as MPEGplus, MPEG+ or MP+, files with the MPC file extensions were developed based on the MPEG-1 Layer-2 (MP2) codec as their starting point. Since then, many other features were added and improved immensely such as Huffman coding, noise substitution, pure variable bitrate, and selectable M/S encoding.
The MPC file extensions use the lossy audio codec with an open source and are mainly optimized so that the stereo audio will have a transparent compression for bitrates of around 160-180 kbits. They are now in their advanced stage containing heavily optimized and patentless code. Very few optimizations were made at lower bitrates; nonetheless, different listening tests were conducted in which the MPC file extensions performed well at both higher and lower bitrates.
The MPC was developed in 1997 by Andree Buschmann and is now maintained by the Musepack Development Team. There are extensive list of programs supporting the format for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X, along with plugins for a variety of third party media players.
On Windows, files with MPC file extensions can be opened with Winamp by installing the Musepack Winamp Plugin, The Core Pocket Media Player, KSP Sound Player, VideoLAN VLC media player, MPD (Music Player Daemon), MPC with K-Lite Codec Pack, jetAudio, and DeliPlayer.
On Mac OS, the programs Cog, xist, VideoLAN VLC Media Player, and the Music Player Daemon opens the MPC file extensions while on Linux, applications such as Aqualung, Audacious, MPlayer, and XMMS support files with the .mpc file extensions.
MPC developers removed all patented code that made all the MPC file extensions free of patent nuisance. This is because in the past, MPC was under suspicion of violating multiple patents.Author: Andree Buschmann/ Frank Klemm
