What is the .NETCDF File Extension?
.NETCDF File Extension Description:
The .netCDF file extension is used by the netCDF software that has a set of interfaces used for data access that are array oriented, and a group of data access libraries intended for Fortran, C, Java, C++ and several programming languages that is entirely distributed. The NetCDF software stands for Network Common Data Form, and its libraries are able to support a format that is machine independent that can represent data in a scientific form.
The .netCDF file extension has two types, which are netCDF 64 bit offset and netCDF classic. The difference between the two is that netCDF 64 bit offset has the VERSION_BYTE=2 and one of its inner offsets makes use of a 64 byte rather than a 31 byte. For the classic .netCDF file extension, it is presented in a formal way where in it uses a grammar notation known as BNF. Using the grammar comments that are optional is enfolded in braces, while comments use the forward slash characters (//). Lower case is used for non-terminals and upper case is used for terminals.
Files with the .netCDF file extension also hold information regarding the data it stored. It is also said that files in the netCDF file extension can be imported or accessed by different computers which has numerous ways of saving characters, integers, and number in floating point format. Additional data can be added to an existing netCDF file, where in the user does not need to change the file's structure or have to perform a duplication of dataset. Files with the .netCDF file extension can also be accessed and manipulated by several users or writers, and newer versions of the NetCDF software are able to support the older netCDF file formats.
The .netCDF file extension is comprised of the header that has the entire information regarding dimensions, variables, and attributes excluding the variable data. The second part of the NetCDF file extension is the data part where in it is comprised of data that has a fixed size, and it also stores variable data that does not have a dimension that is unlimited.Author: Glenn Davis, Russ Rew, Steve Emmerson, John Caron, Harvey Davies, and Ed Hartnett
