What is the .NLM File Extension?
.NLM File Extension Description:
Novell NetWare is a network operating system using cooperative multitasking to run various services. It initially used a monolithic kernel but due to significant hardware and functionality changes, developers of NetWare have to utilize the NLM file extension to re-link the kernel to other object modules. NLM is short for NetWare Loadable Module and is Novell's own unique binary file format.
The file with the .nlm file extension has several other functions aside from being the core file implementor for NetWare. It can be a driver for hardware, a function for server in clustering, an application, a utility, or an OS library. This file can also auto-load another file with the .nlm file extension in which it is dependent upon.
Even though a NetWare server can store DOS and Windows applications, it cannot execute them. The programs that run in a NetWare server must be compiled first into a file with the .nlm file extension, normally written in C and using Novell's libraries.
Files with the .nlm file extension can also request for resources, like memory and process threads, from the NetWare kernel which tracks these requests and identifies the requested memory and the process threads allocated to the specific NLM file extension.
Upon issuing a command, the NLM file extension can direct NetWare kernel to extend the command vocabulary available at the NetWare console prompt. Appropriately coded, files with the .nlm file extension can be re-entrants, permitting multiple instances of an identical code to be loaded and run.
Files with the .nlm file extension contain two sets of information potentially useful for building minimal symbol table: a list of symbols publicly exported and a list of optional native debugging format containing additional symbols.Author: Novell, Inc.
