What is the .NLS File Extension?
.NLS File Extension Description:
NLS stands for National Language Support and is used as a file extension by most programmers to make their creation widely accepted by users. They see to it that their programs could be made available to other languages while they are still in their coding process. Their strings are kept outside the program, usually in separate files, and then programmers use links so that each file with the NLS file extension can come later into the picture to portray its National Language Support role.
For a program to be broadly accepted, it is a must that the particular program is available in the language of the user. Although there are many users now who can read and speak a second or a third language, there are still a large number of users who cannot comprehend the English language adequately for them to understand well the interface, screen display and manual of the program.
The creation of the file with the .nls file extension answers this language problem. This file contains a Table for translating text into other alphabets, characters, or languages (such as the Cyrillic or Hebrew) used in MS-DOS. The Table Header usually contains columns such as Offset (e.g. "08"), a Value ("0x0026"), Size in Bytes ("512"), a Comment ("Codepage to Unicode"). Such is the structure in Windows 95/98/ME.
On Windows NT, the structure of files with the .nls file extension is more simple and easy as there is less data used and no compression is effected. Typical columns in Windows NT for its Table Header consist of an Offset ("00"), a Value ("0x000D"), and Size in Bytes ("Variable"), and Comment ("Codepage to Unicode" and "Unicode to Codepage"). So if a file with the .nls file extension corresponds to a codepage for one of the DOS (OEM-Codepage) versions with a "national language," it also has a second variant of the table Codepage to Unicode, which it will display in the DOS-Box.
Files with the .nls file extension contain the "text/nls" MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) type that can be used to explain the type of encoding needed to send these files over the Internet or can be tapped to open them when received.Author: Microsoft Corporation
