What is the .NSS File Extension?

.NSS File Extension Description:

The NSS file extension was initially used as a Norton Commander Screen Saver module or NC - NDW Screen Saver. John Socha-Leialoha created the Norton Commander 3.0 (NC 3.0), which is the first screen saver-using program. He did not only pioneer the creation of screen savers, he is also the one who first coined the term.

Among the NSS file extensions found in Norton Commander are bug.nss, bungee.nss, evileye.nss, faces.nss, fish.nss, flip.nss, mouse.nss, and tornado.nss.

Aside from the program Norton Commander, the file extension NSS is also used by the more recent Aurora toolkit (or Aurora toolset) program. This program develops a scripting language called NWScript for Neverwinter Nights, a computer role-playing game.

The computer game Neverwinter Nights uses a script or a language that the computer can understand to communicate between platform and user commands. For example, when a character in the game speaks or moves, a corresponding script directs the action or movement. Aurora Toolkit saves this plain text script into a file bearing the NSS file extension as nwscript.nss.

The NWScript saved in a file with the NSS file extension serves two main purposes: to contain all the constant variables in the script, and contain all the text, which could be helpful in a function.

Besides Norton Commander and Aurora toolkit, yet another program utilizing files with the NSS file extension is IncrediMail Magnetic, a screensaver program providing free backgrounds for desktops. In this instance, the file extension NSS is in the type Magnetic Screensaver File. Files with the NSS file extension in IncrediMail Magnetic contain animations and different images, displayed on the computer desktop when the user has been idle for a set period of time.
