What is the .NSV File Extension?
.NSV File Extension Description:
The Nullsoft Streaming Video or NSV is a media container format specifically designed to have the video and generic audio encapsulated together so that it can be easily streamed. The resulting file ends with the NSV file extension.
Files with the .nsv file extension are mainly used for streaming video clips over the Internet. Their audio and video data are about one frame worth of data and neither the video nor the audio can be sent ahead of the other. They support nearly any combination of audio and video codec and do not need the whole file or any requirement for playback. Since they are in bitstream format that are suitable for streaming, you can acquire accurate synchronization at any point in the stream.
The file with the .nsv file extension has a simple structure containing two formats, the file header and the bitstream. The file header contains a single file header that provides information such as the file length, the table of contents (TOC), and the generic metadata.
The metadata file header has the capability to possess additional information regarding the file with .nsv file extension such as the title, creator, aspect display ratio, etc. It can also contain any number of name and value pairs that are stored inside the file as zero or more non-zero bytes.
The TOC file header is the original implementation of the format. It is still used as a base for storing the new format and can still be supported in its old format for old content. TOC is an array of X 32-bit unsigned integers in which each of the items in the array reflects the time of that entry and the value of each item represents the offset in the bitstream.
The extended TOC file header is similar to the old format with the addition of time information for each point in the file with the .nsv file extension. This format is backwards compatible. When using this format, the TOC entry is specified by exact locations of the keyframe. This is the reason why no interpolation can be used.
The bitstream format consists of sequence of frames containing synchronization frames and non-sync frames. These two types start in a different manner; however, they contain the same payload in the end.Author: Justin Frankel
