What is the .NT File Extension?
.NT File Extension Description:
The system files of the Microsoft Windows NT based operating system environment, implemented in relation to its startup files the use the .nt file extension. The file extension .nt is commonly described as a command script that is usually associated with the files AUTOEXEC and CONFIG, which are invoked during the boot process of the system. The .nt file extension normally stores settings and the scripts, which are responsible for loading the operating system's resources, and is not meant to be deleted, moved, or modified, because it will affect the system's startup process.
The file extension .nt types are normally represented in the installation disc of the operating system with the NT_ format type under the same file name. Corruption of these files normally requires the user to replace the installed files with those in the installation disc, or at times have an installed copy under the C:/ WINDOWS/ Repair/ folder in the hard drive. Since the .nt file extension supported COMMAND.COM system shell runs under a 16-bit environment, some update versions of the Microsoft Windows XP SP2 implement codes which automatically delete the .nt file extension version of the AUTOEXEC file under the WINDOWS/ System32/ folder, because it assumes that all software applications must be running in a 32-bit environment instead of 16-bit. These instances would require changing the attribute of the file AUTOEXEC with the .nt file extension with a Read Only attribute, to prevent unintentional or accidental deletion.
The main intent for the deployment of system files like the file extension .nt is to prepare the system and its related components, for the various operations it will encounter in relation to its installed applications. The .nt file extension types are likewise responsible for allowing the various hardware device interfaces, and maintaining the communication link between these devices and the operating system. The most notable function for the file extension .nt in relation to newer operating system environments from Microsoft is its capability to allow for backward compatibility between the 32-bit and the 16-bit environments.Author: Microsoft Corporation
