What is the .ODS File Extension?
.ODS File Extension Description:
The OpenDocument format is an open file specification for office documents such as word processing, presentations, spreadsheets, and charts based on the standards set by the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS). The specification is also based on the XML format implemented by the OpenOffice.org suite of office applications.
The ODS file extension, which identifies spreadsheet documents, is one of the most common file extensions used for OpenDocument files that meets the definition of an open standard. Other file extensions are the ODT file extension for text documents, the ODP file extension for presentation documents, and the ODG file extension for graphic files. The first two letters of this file extension "OD" stands for OpenDocument while the last letter indicates the document type. In the case of the ODS file extension, S stands for spreadsheet.
The file with the .ods file extension mainly contains a series of tables but it can also have forms, change tracking information, and different kinds of declarations that simplify the use of spreadsheet tables. Each of these tables and their analysis are contained in any of the document epilogue or document prelude.
The document prelude of files with the .ods file extension is the beginning of the file. It consists of the form data, the setting for the calculation of the formulas, the rules for validating the cell content, the change tracking information, and the declarations for label ranges. On the other hand, the document epilogue consists of the database ranges, the declarations for named expressions, the consolidation operations, the data pilot tables, and the DDE links.
There are several attributes that greatly affect the calculation of formulas in files with the .ods file extension. These attributes includes case sensitive, null year, null date, precision, iteration, regular expression, automatic find label, and the search criteria that applies to the whole cell. They need to be saved in the <table:calculation-settings> element of the file.
In order to protect the structure of files with the .ods file extension, the table:structureprotected attribute can be used so that other users cannot delete, move, insert, or rename any of the tables in the file. And in order to prevent other users from resetting the table protection flag, using the-table:protection-key attribute can specify a password.
