The file extension .ofm is the PostSript font description file used as a format for specifying outline font and encoding information of the font and digital typesetting. Basically, the version OS/2 of metric file binary fonts uses the file extension .ofm. Having its file extension .ofm, the PostScript fonts feature different types.
With its format .ofm, the Roman font that is single-byte in form characterizes the Type 1 of the PostScript fonts. PostScript printers and the software Adobe Type Manager use this type. Fonts created by the program TeX, a complex typesetting mathematical formula, are available in Type 1 PostScript. Meanwhile, the type 2 PostScript font, with the file extension OFM, features a compact and concise outline of font file. It serves as a format to make string characters for Compact Font Format (CFF), in which the Type 1 of the OpenType is based. The CFF also embeds fonts in the 3.0 version of the Acrobat PDF files.
The Type 3 PostScript, whose file format is .ofm, contains glyphs that are determined through the full language of PostScript. The type 3 PostScript specifies font patterns that include their color, shades and fill patterns. The Type 4 PostScript, together with the file extension .ofm, serves as the format used for making font cartridges and storing permanent hard disk for printer.
With the file extension .ofm, the Type 5 PostScript serves as the Compressed ROM font while the Types 9, 10, 11 refers to the Ghostscript that offers CID formatted keys for other types of PostScript. The type 14 of the PostScript, also known as the font format Chameleon, features compressing multiple fonts into a small storage space. With the file extension .ofm, the type 32 is the format used to download bitmap fonts for interpreters of PostScript. Through this, the memory of the printer saves space since the transfer of the characters into the font cache is done directly.
