What is the .OOM File Extension?
.OOM File Extension Description:
A shell is a kind of software that provides access to programs, which may be hidden inside a kernel. A kernel stores important components of most platforms used by computers. Shell also refers to kinds of software that allows the users to process a part of another program. Shells typically provide a much simpler program access to the system's resources. There are command line shells and graphical user interface shells. A command line shell provides users a field wherein they can type commands that will be processed by a certain program. The shell interprets these commands and the task is communicated to the program in question. The graphical user interface (GUI) shell does the same in a more user-friendly fashion. GUIs provide users with a set of menus and processes, which can be used. This kind of shell provides users with a point-and-click way of setting tasks for a program.
Using a shell can use up the resources of the system. In the times of DOS, this caused a problem, as computers then did not have enough memory or resources to handle shelling programs. The Simtel Legacy came up with the ShellRoom or Shroom program to handle this. Command line interfaces were the most popular shells used at the time due to the structure of DOS. Instead of shelling the program to the computers memory, the software uses up the space in the hard disk. This provides the user with more resources available.
The SHellRoom program uses files with the .oom file extension. The OOM file extension is attached to swap files created by the software. Swap files are similar to temp files in that they are created as a placeholder when a file is being transferred or copied. With SHellRoom, the user can actually choose where to shell a program. If the space in the memory is too small, the data can be allocated to the hard disk and vice versa. Files with the OOM file extension can reside either in the disk or memory of the system. If a file is being transferred, the file with the file extension .oom is placed in the destination. Once the transfer or copy is completed, files with the OOM extension are automatically deleted.Author: Simtel Legacy
