What is the .OPW File Extension?
.OPW File Extension Description:
The file extension OPW is the extension used for files that contain all the user names and passwords in Oracle Database Lite. Oracle Lite is part of Oracle Database that extends the grid environment to mobile devices by using the power of a secured database. It is the leading platform for the development, management, and deployment of mobile applications such as PDAs, Smartphones, traditional laptops, and handheld computers.
Oracle Lite consists of three main components: the Mobile Server for the synchronization of data, the Life Cycle Management for the distribution, installation, and management of the software, data and files, and the Mobile Development Kit (MDK) for accelerating the development of mobile applications.
MDK is a set of tools, API's, tutorials, and code samples. It does not only install the client database and Oracle Lite runtime binaries but also the Oracle Lite Utilities that simplify the process of describing, deploying, and debugging mobile applications. The Oracle Lite Utilities contains the following tools:
* CREATEDB - for creating databases
* Mobile SQL - a GUI for connecting to the databases
* ODBINFO - for defining the version number and volume ID of an Oracle Lite database
* REMOVEDB - for deleting databases
* DECRYPDB - for decrypting databases
* ENCRYPDB - for encrypting Oracle Lite databases
The ENCRYPDB tool provides the encryption of the database in Oracle Lite with a password and the modification of this password. The password, which prevents unauthorized access to the database, is written to a file with the .opw file extension. It encrypts the database so that the data stored in the database cannot be interpreted.
After the creation of a database file with the .odb file extension, the file with the .opw file extension is generated including the password and the encrypted information about the user. The password can be 128 characters in length and can be used by the user as the key to unlock the file with the .opw file extension before the file with the .odb file extension is accessed.
When the database is backed up or copied, the file extension OPW has to be included. This is because encrypted databases cannot be decrypted without the password contained in files with the .opw file extension. It is the password that encrypts the entire database.Author: Oracle Corporation
