What is the .RGB File Extension?
.RGB File Extension Description:
The RGB file extension was originally used as a native graphics file format for saving color bitmap images created by Silicon Graphics Incorporated (SGI) for its workstations. However, the RGB file extension has now become one of the standards in raster images.
The file with the .rgb file extension begins with a header containing 2 bytes of IRIS image file with MAGIC number of about 474 decimal at the beginning of the file. This is followed by one byte of char in STORAGE format and another one byte of char with one or two bytes per pixel channel.
Following the STORAGE is two bytes of ushort DIMENSION number, which can either, be 1 for an XSIZE long of single row, 2 for a single 3D image, and 3 for multiple 2D images. Next is 2 bytes of ZSIZE in pixels, 2 bytes of YSIZE in pixels, and 2 bytes of ZSIZE indicating the number of channels where 1 is grayscale, 3 is RGB, and 4 is RGB and Alpha.
The header of the file with the .rgb file extension also contains 4 bytes long of minimum pixel value (PIXMIN), 4 bytes long of maximum pixel value (PIXMAX), and 4 bytes of char DUMMY that is normally set to 0. The IMAGENAME comes next with 80 bytes characters, then the COLOMAP ID with 4 bytes long where 0 is equal to normal mode, 1 means dithered, 2 for the index color and 3 for a colourmap. The header ends with 404 bytes of DUMMY characters, making the header a total of 512 bytes.
Following the header is an offset data in case the image is RLE (run length encoded). The file with the .rgb file extension ends with the image data.
Files with the .rgb file extension contain the colors specifically used for the display of graphics and images. Such colors are those emitted by electronic devices such as television sets and computer monitors. These files normally consist of thousands of little dots sitting very closely to each other where each dot has the capacity to be its own color. Every color displayed in each of these dots is a balance of red, green, and blue light. Thus, when viewed from afar, they make up a whole picture allowing variations of color across the entire screen.Author: Silicon Graphics, Inc.
