What is the .RHISTORY File Extension?
.RHISTORY File Extension Description:
The R environment is an integrated suite of software facilities for graphical display, statistical computing, calculation, and data manipulation. It includes a well-developed programming language that contains recursive functions that are user-defined with output and input, effective data handling, integrated collection of intermediate tools for data analysis and suite of operators for calculations on arrays.
By principle, the R scripts have the file extension R. All the objects that are created throughout the R sessions may be stored permanently inside a file for use in future sessions. At the end of each session, the user is given the opportunity to save all the currently available objects to a file named .RData inside its current directory. All the commands that you have typed since the beginning of the current session and all the commands that have been issued during that session are saved as files with the .rhistory file extension.
Once R is actually started at a later time coming from a similar directory, it then reloads the actual workspace from the file with the .rdata file extension. This is at the precise time as the linked commands history will be reloaded from the RHISTORY file extension.
The Drag and Drop section of the software - to open file in an editor or to source the file, which is the default option, define the behavior of the R start-up. This Default Library path section enables R to have a directory added on the next start-up to the library's search/install path.
The history section is where reading of the history file on start-up can be controlled. When selected, R will read all the files with the .rhistory file extension on start-up. The files contain history field used to read and store the history and may be edited so as to enable the selecting of the files with the .rhistory file extension. If the similar history file is selected regardless of the selected working directory, a fixed path must be specified such as /*.rhistory. The default button will reset the history filename to its default value.
The History handling area provides setting of the maximum number of files with the .rhistory file extension to be kept in history, to remove duplicate entries, to the actual strip comments prior to the entry that is being added to the history, and to cleanup history entries. Cleaning history entries is very useful in removing blank lines when submitting multiple lines using the Command-Return.Author: Ross Ihaka and Robert Gentleman
