What is the .RMK File Extension?
.RMK File Extension Description:
The RMK file extensions are called Makefiles which is a professional procedure that traces which files have changed since the last time the project was built and reminds the compiler exclusively on those source code files and their dependencies. The file extension RMK is generally used in C/CC++ projects. However, many compilers believe that its principle can also be used with almost any software project.
Stuart Feldman of Bell Labs created the RMK file extension in 1977. Although the existence of Integrated Development Environments and language-specific compiler features can be used to manage the build process in modern systems, the RMK file extensions continue to be extensively used, particularly in Unix-based platforms.
The file with the .rmk file extension is made of lines of text, which describe a file (or set of files) or a rule name as depending on a set of files. Output files are highlighted as depending on their source files, and source files are highlighted as depending on files, which they have internally. Having the dependency noted, a string of lines tab-indented text follow which describe how to transform the input into output, if the former has been changed more recently that the latter. If it happens such descriptions are present, they are referred to as "build scripts" and are transferred to the shell to generate the target file.
The RMK file extension has passed through numerous revisions and rewrites and various from-scratch variations using the same file format and basic algorithmic principles. Among them are:
* BSD make - comes from Adam de Boor's creation capable of building targets in parallel, which survives different levels of changes in FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD. Particularly, this has conditionals and loops utilized at the parsing stage and can be used to conditionally and programmatically build the makefile, plus making of targets at runtime.
* GNU make - part of GNU/Linux installations repeatedly used in combination with the GNU build system and has diverted from the conventional makefile particularly in pattern-fitting in dependency graphs and build targets as well as a number of functions which may be tapped to do things like collecting a list of files in the current directory.
* Microsoft nmake - fairly basic and usually available on Windows, which gives only subset features of the two versions, BSD make and GNU make.Author: Bell Labs
