What is the .RS File Extension?
.RS File Extension Description:
The RS file extension represents the data file gathered during the segmentation and reassembly process within the Amiga operating system. Data files stored during segmentation and reassembly serve as resource files for the said operating system to function.
The Amiga operating system is a pre-emptive multitasking operating system that runs on 32-bit microprocessors under Motorola's series 68k. The Amiga operating system package includes Exec, a kernel for preemptive multitasking, a windowing application-programming interface called Intuition, and Workbench, a graphical user interface. Amiga also developed the RS file extension.
The file extension RS allows fragmented and reassembled packets, which are formatted data, to be transmitted across Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. This mode acts in the form of a cell relaying, packet switching network using a data link layer protocol that encodes traffic into fixed-sized cells measuring 5 bytes of header information and data in 48 bytes. With this small payload, almost each packet from other protocols is processed in this way. The Amiga-developed chip called SAR typically handles this process.
The RS file extension demands this process to be conceptually simple as possible. This means that incoming packets, which come from a different protocol, be fragmented into segments to fit into 48 byte chunks transported as ATM cell payloads. After a packet is fragmented this way, the RS file extension will then transmit it to the ATM network. At the far end of this process, the chunks are put back together on its original form to reconstitute the original packet.
The RS file extension encapsulates different data in a variety of ways, depending on the type of data handled during the fragmentation process. In line with this, the RS file extension utilizes five different schemes, which are referred to as ATM Adaptation Layers (AAL). These schemes are tagged with numbers that correspondingly serve a specific type of data, namely:
* AAL0 - For raw cells without special format
* AAL1 - For constant bitrate and circuit emulation data
* AAL2 - For variable bitrate synchronous data, like voice
* AAL3/4 - For variable bitrate asynchronous data, like Frame Relay transport
* AAL5 - Used during data trafficAuthor: Amiga Corporation
