What is the .SAFE File Extension?
.SAFE File Extension Description:
eCipher is a security tool that supplements your existing email client. It encrypts all messages and file attachments with AES 256 and RSA 2048 bit encryption so they can be protected against tampering, unauthorized access, and questioning. eCipher encrypted files are given the file extension SAFE, an acronym for Secure Alternative for Email.
Every eCipher installation includes the Desktop Toolbar where you can directly compose, reply, and view files with the .safe file extension. This toolbar also provides access to eCipher's program settings and contacts. eCipher's contact cards allow you to quickly send files with the .safe file extension to other people.
However, in order to view the contents of files with the .safe file extension, recipients have to install and activate an eCipher account. Your email address has to be registered with the eCipher's server that can be used to determine access rights. Every email protected by eCipher contains a cover letter that provides a download link to facilitate access to the server.
When you send a file with the .safe file extension, the information is protected on your system and meets the criteria of rational safeguard set by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPPA) Privacy Rule. HIPPA ensures that only the intended recipients can open the email messages and nobody else can save, copy, forward or print them.
The rights on files with the .safe file extension cannot be reset. If you wish to do so, the original sender has to be contacted first and asked to resend the information to the e-mail address you have registered with eCipher.
There are other ways of saving and opening files with the .safe file extension. The first one is by dragging the file onto the View File section of the toolbar while the eCipher application is running; second is by saving them to your hard disk then double-click them to open; lastly is by double-clicking any file attachment inside any web-based email client which will then open the file in eCipher.Author: Essential Security Software
