The SD file extension defines audio files created in the Digidesign Sound designer. This file format for audio files was created for one of the first popular programs for editing audio that was available for MAC systems. The SD file extension functions for the container format for storing Sound Designer audio data in your computer.
Files in the .sd file extension are created and stored with an approach, by sampling the audio voltage upon playback that corresponds to a particular position on the speaker's membrane and individual channels, with a specific resolution or bit number per sample.
Files in the .sd file extension are created by the Sound Designer digital sampler that analyzes sound by means of measuring amplitude of wave forms several thousand times in a second. Samples, which are discrete measurements are created, and the whole set of samples are used in the reproduction of a sound which are stored as sound files in the .sd file extension.
Ordinarily, sound files contain a long number string that is manipulated by Sound Designer, by mixing and manipulating data. The universal waveform sound editor, Sound Designer, which also functions as a processor for digital signals, produces audio files with the .sd file extension.

If the sound is too long to show in the display window, it can be scrolled so you can select the part that you want to edit. Sound Designer can also mix and merge waveforms, and involve two sound files. These files are also stored with the .sd file extension after editing with Sound Designer.
Sound files with the .sd file extension are compatible, regardless of the sampler that was used in the creation of the sound. A sample is transferred into the computer and is transformed into a data format in 16 bits. Samples are converted again into the original format upon transferring back into the sampler. Therefore, Sound Designer can also be useful for porting samples across various samplers.
