What is the .SDX File Extension?
.SDX File Extension Description:
SDS, short for Sample Dump Standard, is a universal protocol for the exchange of sound samples. It defines the standard method for transferring sound sample data between devices equipped with the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI). Prior to the development of SDS, musicians have no other way of transferring sound data that would come from one assigned sampler to the other. The only way is to resample the sounds onto the additional instrument.
The MIDI SDS was adopted by Simmons in 1988 and subsequently created the SDX file extension. The files with the .sdx file extension were at first exclusive to the Simmons SDX system but are now used as standard MIDI parameters for SDS exchange.
The SDX file extension is the compacted form that the Simmons SDX program uses to save the SDS samples. This is via the exchanging of the digital audio waveform data on top of the MIDI devices. The device which sends the actual waveform data is named as the "transmitter", while the device which receives it is called the receiver.
The only way to do this is with System Exclusive messages. Files with the .sdx file extension can contain SysEx messages such as the Data Packet, Dump Header, DUMP REQUEST, CANCEL, ACK, WAIT, and NAK. The receiver creates the first five of these while the transmitter creates the last two.
The main sampler of the files with the .sdx file extension is the Simmons SDX. This sampler is a full blown 16 bit X 16 channel that can be stored in a drum machine and can be turned into a real drum track through the combination of Cubase and SDX. Files with the .sdx file extension are similar to Akai samplers with severe bias towards being a drum kit.
The main unit of the Simmons SDX system also houses 16 velocity sensitive pads along with an integrated trackball. No other dedicated drum sampler comes near the power of the SDX system and no other drum sampler is half its size or a quarter of its weight even to this date. It supports both 12-bit and 16-bit MIDI sample dump standards.Author: SIMMONS
