What is the .SGI File Extension?
.SGI File Extension Description:
The SGI file extension is used by generic bitmap graphics for storing grayscale, black and white, and color images. The files with the .sgi file extension are actually found on all Silicon Graphics machinery and part of the SGI image library called "limage", where in, they can only be read and written.
Files with the .sgi file extension are one amongst very few files that use the "scan line offset table" in order to indicate the starting point of every scan line situated inside the data's compressed image. They can also contain color maps or alpha channel data. Aside from this, they can have a very large number of bit planes.
The header of each file with the .sgi file extension has a byte size of 512 and contains the following structure:
* Magic - file's identification number always valued at 474;
* Storage - a compression flag is used;
* BPC - the number of bytes per pixel;
* Dimension - the number of image dimension and how the image data is stored;
* XSize - the width of the image in pixels;
* YSize - the height of the image in pixels;
* ZSize - the number of bit planes in a bitmap image;
* PixMin - the smallest pixel value is usually 00h;
* PixMax - the largest pixel value is usually EFh;
* Dummy1- an unused NULL 4 byte character field;
* ImageName - an 80 byte character name of the image;
* ColorMap - a format of pixel data;
* Dummy2 - a NULL 404 byte character field that is used in order to have the header padded out onto an even sized 512 bytes.
If the files with the .sgi file extension contain uncompressed data, the image immediately appears after the header, but if they contain compressed data, a type of "scan line offset table" follows the header. Then, the image follows the table.
The data of files with the .sgi file extension can be presented in either RLE (run length encoded) or uncompressed verbatim. The image data in verbatim is plane written as a type of scan line while the image data in RLE begins with the scan line within the compressed image data that runs by using the scan line offset table. These are actually two tables written one after the other onto the file with the .sgi file extension.Author: Paul Haeberli of Silicon Graphics
