What is the .SHG File Extension?

.SHG File Extension Description:

Used during the days of Microsoft Windows 3.1, the SHG file extension is the earlier version of the hyperlink support for Microsoft WinHelp. The current WinHelp incorporates HTML technology using links to navigate into various sections of the application.

The .shg file extension, however, does not have the necessary text support that is being used in today's WinHelp. It incorporates trajectory technology to jump from one section of the application to another using a defined clickable area.

Described as a Segmented Hyper-Graphics file by Microsoft Corporation, the .sgh file format is used to save a Microsoft Bitmap (BMP) image or a Windows Metafile (WMF) graphics and to store the coordinates of pre-defined areas on the image, known as a "hotspot".

The "hotspot" will be present when the image is displayed by the WinHelp application, and, when clicked, it will transport the user automatically to another location. This is because of the Hypertext link macro found on the SHG file, which is quite primitive compared to today's version of the Hypertext language. An. Shg image file is created using the SHED.EXE application running under Microsoft Windows 3.1 operating systems.

Aside from being a singular file, the .shg file extension is also being used with the MRB file format. The MRB file format is described as Multiple-Resolution Bitmap, which contains one or more .shg images, though rendered in a different resolution. Files with the .shg extension will be placed into another file with an MRB file extension using a compiler, and will be later used by WinHelp.

The application will read the MRB file and choose which .shg bitmap file closely matches the resolution of the display, as specified by the graphics driver used in the system.
