The file extension SRF is the container used for raw images captured using Sony digital cameras, i.e. DSC-F828. The SRF file extension has the function of storing image data in a format that is uncompressed; exactly as the camera captured it. However, the files with the .srf file extension can still be edited using the exposure and color temperature settings after the image files are saved on a computer.

Usually, files with the .srf file extension are also called digital negatives since they serve the same purpose of a film negative used in traditional photography. As a raw image file format, the file extension SRF contains data that are minimally processed. Normally, files with the .srf file extension are to be processed through a raw converter containing an internal color space, before being converted into an RGB file format, i.e. JPEG or TIFF. Being a Sony raw image format, the file with the .srf file extension can contain portions that are encrypted, in order to prevent third-party software to access it.
