What is the .SST File Extension?
.SST File Extension Description:
A digital certificate is used to certify the identity of its owner. When a certificate is presented, the identity of the owner is verified based on the quality of the contents of the certificate such as the personal information of the owner, the signature of the issuing authority, and the information needed to contact and identify the issuing authority.
A certificate store is the storage location of one or more digital certificates possibly issued from a number of a different certification authorities. The SST file extension is the only format that preserves certificate store properties. SST means Serialized Certificate Store. It is useful when roots have been configured and you want them to be transmitted to another user or sent with an email message.
The process of creating serialized certificate context into a form that can be stored in a file with the .sst file extension is done by using the CertSerializeCertificateStoreElement function, the results of which can be continued to storage so that the certificate and its properties can be retrieved at a later time. The files with the .sst file extension can also be changed back into a certificate and added to a certificate store.
The file with the .sst file extension can be added with a serialized element to the store, namely the CRL (Certificate Revocation List) and the CTL (Certificate Trust List), and its extended properties. The extended properties are mainly associated with the certificate and not part of the certificate issued by the CA (Certification Authority). They are not available on the certificate when used on a non-Microsoft platform.
The file extension SST is also used by the program SSTMAP that produce mapped and navigated image data files from AVHRR data. This program also produces ancillary data files such as arrays of 512 rows x 512 columns and image files that are actually produced as an image and graphics data that have 2 bytes per pixel.
Files with the .sst file extension produced on the SSTMAP application can be compressed prior to downloading to an IDIDAS computer. This substantially causes the transfer time to decrease along with the disk storage requirements. Images files with the .sst file extension are compressed using TYPE 1 compression in which the files are compressed in a similar format however the graphics will be compressed differently.Author: Microsoft Corporation
